Early 2023: April Bill Increase
CBS News Miami: In the past, there was a significant announcement regarding an upcoming increase in power bills. New legislation had been proposed to raise rates, citing the need to compensate for recent storms. The increase was attributed to the impact of hurricanes and higher-than-expected natural gas costs.
For residential customers using 1,000 kilowatt-hours, their bills were set to rise by approximately $15, from $130 to $144, starting in April. However, it was projected that bills would decrease to $139 in May due to lower gas prices. You know... projected.
Late 2022: Higher Bills and Customers Switching to Solar
WKMG News 6 Orlando: The legislation, known as House Bill 741, aimed to change the practice of net metering, which allows solar customers to sell excess solar energy back to utility companies at retail rates.
The news report featured a couple, Megan McCollum and Jonathan White, who had installed solar panels and benefited from net metering, reducing their monthly electric bills to around $15.
2021: FPL Rate Hike Starting January
CBS News Miami: Starting in January 2021, electricity bills in Florida experienced a slight increase due to the approval of various costs by the state's Public Service Commission. These costs included expenses like power plant fuel, and they were passed on to customers.
The estimate indicated that customers using 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per month would see their bills increase from around $96 to $99. It's important to note that the actual usage might vary from this benchmark estimate.
2020: FPL Proposes an 18% increase over 4 years
CGTN America: Florida Power and Light (FPL), the state's largest utility company, is proposing an 18% electricity rate hike over the next four years. However, community groups in South Florida have expressed concerns that these increases will disproportionately affect minority and low-income households, especially given the ongoing recovery from the pandemic. The company claims it needs the additional two billion dollars to fund infrastructure improvements for natural gas and solar energy production and to increase its profit margins.
2018: FPL Proposes additional Surcharges due to Hurricanes
FOX4 News: Florida Power & Light (FPL) has announced plans to recover $1.3 billion from its customers to cover the costs of restoring electricity after hurricanes. This expense was incurred during hurricane restoration efforts. However, the plan is subject to approval by the state's Public Service Commission.
If the plan is approved, customers can expect surcharges to appear on their bills starting in March. Initially, it will be an extra 64 cents in March, with the surcharge increasing gradually throughout the year 2020 until the $1.3 billion is recovered.
2017: FPL Rate Hike of 318.5M Was Approved
WPTV News: Florida Power & Light (FPL) had received state approval for a rate increase of over $300 million. This meant that, in the past, customers saw their bills go up by an extra $3 per month for approximately a year. This increase was in addition to a $7 raise that had gone into effect on January 1st.
FPL explained that the rate hike was needed to cover the expenses incurred during their response to Hurricane Matthew.
2016: Another FPL Rate Hike of 811M Was Approved
ABC Action News: Florida Power and Light (FPL) customers are likely to see an increase in their electricity bills starting in January due to a recently approved rate hike by state regulators.
The rate hike amounts to $811 million and will impact nearly 5 million customers. In the new year, the average customer can expect to pay about $7 more per month. Additionally, there will be another rate hike in 2018, likely in the range of $3 to $4 more per month.
and the list goes on and on…
Just remember: the average energy bill in Florida in 1995 was $62.
Today, it is almost 3 times that number and goes higher each time.
